Tchaikovsky's “The Seasons“ is a set of twelve short and evocative solo piano pieces. Each one is characteristic of a different month in the Russian year and they are all accompanied by brief 'poetic epigraphs.' “August“ is sub-titled 'The Harvest' and has the following text: “The harvest has grown, people in families cutting the tall rye down to the root! Put together the haystacks, music screeching all night from the hauling carts.“ '“The Seasons“ is also heard in several orchestral arrangements and the month uploaded here comes from a transcription of the whole set arranged by the English composer David Matthews. It is played by the Norddeutsche Rundfunk Orchestra, conductor Carl Davis, and is taken from their 1991 radio broadcast of the complete work's premiere.
