Emil Gilels was born in 1916 in Odessa, in what is now Ukraine. He was from a Jewish family. Unlike many of his contemporaries he remained in the USSR but he was able to travel extensively in the West. He was one of the first musicians allowed to travel outside of the country since Prokofiev in the 1920s. Gilels was widely considered one of the greatest virtuosos of the piano in the 20th century, and he traveled broadly around the world. He made many recordings both in the USSR as well in Europe and the US. He died relatively young at the age of 68 of a kidney failure. Tracks: 00:00 Maestoso 24:00 Adagio 38:44 Rondo.
