On Thursday, the United States issued a warning stating that it might restrict foreign aid to Ghana should the country's president enact a new bill that criminalizes identifying as LGBTQ . Ghana's parliament passed legislation on Wednesday that would result in up to three years of imprisonment for those identifying as LGBTQ and a five-year jail term for individuals involved in forming or funding LGBTQ groups. State Department spokesperson Matt Miller remarked on Thursday, “If this bill becomes law, it would likely deter foreign investment and tourism in Ghana.“ He further stated, “Should the bill receive presidential approval, it could potentially impact U.S. assistance.“ Although the bill awaits President Nana Akufo-Addo's signature, he has previously indicated that he would support it if it garners the majority support of Ghanaians.
