Ravel composed a fantasy on the fairy tale “La belle au bois dormant“ (Sleeping Beauty) as piano music for four hands for the children of a family friend. In 1910, four further pieces, also based on fairy tales, appeared, which he combined into a cycle under the title Ma mère l’oye. Ravel was inspired by tales from a collection of fairy tales by Charles Perrault. ABOUT THIS VERSION „Ma Mère l’Oye from Maurice Ravel is very well know for being both a 4 hands piano piece and a orchestral piece. Ravel himself orchestrated the different mouvements with a lot of imagination and also adding wonderful percussion colors. I had the 2 versions in my head when I decided to arrange one of the mouvement : “Laideronnette, Impératrice des Pagodes” for solo percussion. My main wish was to keep those orchestral colors and bring them into the intimacy of the 4 hands version. The marimba takes obviously a very important role in the arrangement but I really wanted to extend the instrument with other tuned instruments such as crotales, thaï gongs, and suspended xylophone notes. In addition to this, the tam tam is here to give this orchestral feeling. Finding the right balance for the harmonies was one of the most challenging thing to do, knowing that I had to switch from 4 hands to only 4 sticks!„ ______________________ AURÉLIEN GIGNOUX Nominated Victoire de la Musique in the category of Instrumental Soloist Revelations 2021, winner of the second prize at the prestigious ARD international competition in Munich, and of the prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work, he has already performed as a soloist with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Münchner Rundfunk Orchester, the Orchestre Symphonique de l’Opéra de Toulon and the Osnabrücker Symphonieorchester.
