Clark Gable and Carole Lombard in the battlefield of Peachtree Creek in Atlanta, GA, where they went for the premiere of Gone with the Wind, in December 1939. (William Hartsfield’s footage from the premiere)⠀ ⠀ Clark Gable was very reluctant to accept his part as Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind. He was being loaned out by MGM to Selznick International in exchange to the distribution rights of the film, which gave him the feeling that he was being traded like an animal. Louis B. Mayer then offered him a 50,000 dollars extra payment so he could give to his wife at the time in exchange for a divorce so he could finally marry Carole Lombard, after seeing each other for over 3 years. David O’Selznick gave them a weekend off during shooting so they could get married. They remained together until her sudden death in January 1942.
