The date was set by the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin “On the establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation” dated May 31, 2006. Space Forces Day is dedicated to the launch date of the first artificial Earth satellite on October 4, 1957 from the research and testing site of the USSR Ministry of Defense (later the Baikonur Cosmodrome) in Kazakhstan.
