LAST NIGHT I HAD THE HONOR AND PRIVILEGE OF BEING INVITED TO ATTEND A CONCERT BY THE RUSSIAN COMPOSER/PIANIST, SERGEI KOSSENKO Officially entitled “Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and World Musical Heritage”, the play list performed my Mr. Kossenko included medleys of Rimsky-Korsakov’s best known works, including Scheherazade and Capriccio Espagnol, but also songs composed by Rimsky-Korsakov’s contemporaries—Frederic Chopin, Igor Stravinsky, and Sergei Prokofiev. As performed by Mr. Kossenko (who also introduced each piece with an informative history of the music and times in which it was written), the songs came alive. It was truly a magical experience. Mr. Kossenko addressed the crowd in English, underscoring the fact that the concert was performed not for the exclusive benefit of the Russian Embassy, but rather as an opportunity for a non-Russian audience to develop an appreciation for Russian culture.
