I used to love the Rhythm Heaven games when I was younger, and I knew i had to give this a shot when I saw it. There’s a few things worth noting here. First off, Melatonin is not a one-button rhythm game. Most of the mini games use only one button, but there are several that use the arrow keys instead. It’s fine, just worth noting, and it does get disorienting in some of the remix stages. Second, Melatonin is not a hard game. If you’re looking for a super fast and punishing rhythm game like Lanota or ADOFAI, this is not it. This is a sleepy game for sleepy people. The minigames in Melatonin are generally well done; they look and play nice for the most part. That being said, your enjoyment of this game will hinge almost entirely on how you feel about that lo-fi musical style. Every minigame in this game adheres to that style, so if you don’t like what you hear here, you won’t like this game. As a whole I like this game, it’s short but well executed, and a pleasant couple of hours. The office minigame stands out to me as a particularly well done level, with some really quality sound design there. I will complain about one level in particular: the stupid phone hopping minigame. That minigame sucks. The animations are super misleading on timing which makes the whole affair confusing as hell (you hit the button waaay later than you think you would). it sucks that this minigame is so early in the game since it left me with a pretty bad first impression.
