“The legends of Morocco“ - Nass El Ghiwane, a Moroccan music band also called “The Rolling Stones of Africa” by Italian-American director Martin Scorsese, was created in the 1970s in the heart of the Hay Mohammadi neighbourhood in Casablanca, one of the poorest areas of the city, and quickly became a legend! Inspired by different genres such as Aïta, Gnaoua, Hmadcha or Jilala music, their compositions mix engaged and poetic lyrics and reflect the malaise of Moroccan youth of the time. This intelligent cocktail of popular songs, guembri, banjo and trance, along with moments of declaimed poetry, revolutionised Moroccan and Maghrebian music and left an indelible mark on the Moroccan cultural landscape, to the point where it is now referred to as Ghiwani style. Nass El Ghiwane’s work has been used by many filmmakers, writers and musicologists, and has deeply influenced many artists of the time, such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, the Stones and Robert Plant.
