Natural disaster 19 July 2024. The National Seismological Center has reported a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 near San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. The epicenter of the quake was located just 20 kilometers from the city. Initially, the agency reported the earthquake as having a magnitude of 6.7. However, after further assessment, it was upgraded to nearly 7.3 on the Richter scale. The earthquake began at precisely 21:50 local time. It had a significant depth of 166 kilometers below the surface. As of this publication, a total of nine aftershocks have been recorded in the region. These aftershocks have ranged in magnitude from 4 to 2 degrees. There have been no reports of casualties so far, according to officials. However, hundreds of buildings have sustained varying degrees of damage. The damage to buildings has ranged from minor to nearly complete destruction. Several traffic accidents and power outages were reported on the route from Calama to Tocopilla. The President has advised the public to follow the guidelines from the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service. Videos have shown people in pajamas leaving their homes in a hurry.
