After installing their Nomadic Cooling A/C unit, Turn Overland windows, and upgrading the truck's exterior, they now turn their attention to the interior build-out. If you're looking for inspiration for building your own custom RV or tiny home, this episode is packed with valuable tips, from cabinetry to flooring and everything in between. Interior Build Begins: Insulation, Walls, and Ceiling Starting with the basics, Abe and Mel install insulation, furring strips, and walls to prep their rig for full-time living. They’ve opted for 3M Thinsulate insulation, sourced from Vanlife Outfitters, which provides great R-value without retaining moisture like wool does. For the ceiling, they chose shiplap tongue-and-groove boards from WoodPLC, pre-primed and ready to be painted black to match the sleek, modern design of the truck’s interior. Cabinet Installation & Maximizing Space The real magic begins with the cabinetry installation. Kevin, their master carpenter, starts with the desk, couch, and electrical cabinet area, carefully designing this key feature to maximize storage and functionality. With every inch in a tiny home being precious, adjustments are made on the fly to ensure ease of access and utility—like creating removable panels for electrical components. They’ve chosen lightweight plywood to keep the build efficient, with ¾-inch pieces for the lower cabinets. One standout is the 8-cubic-foot Norcold DC fridge, a 12V unit that seamlessly integrates with their electrical system. It offers ample room for fresh food storage without being too bulky for the space, and the matte black finish fits perfectly with their dark, minimalistic design. Custom Kitchen Cabinet & Water System In the kitchen, the cabinets are not only designed to store food and utensils but also house the truck’s water system. One side holds a water tank, accessible from the exterior through a cargo door, while the other side features drawers for an induction cooktop and additional kitchen storage. This functional layout ensures that everything has its place, making life on the road as smooth as possible. Countertop Design & Challenges Finding the perfect countertop was a challenge. After experimenting with different options, Abe and Mel stumbled upon an edge-glued pine board from Menards that perfectly matched the look they were going for—natural, warm, and full of character. Paired with flooring polyurethane for durability, the countertops are the ideal finishing touch for their stylish kitchen. Sleek Black A/C & Custom Ceiling The black Nomadic Cooling A/C unit blends seamlessly with the dark ceiling, providing a high-end, sleek look. The unit's directional vents ensure airflow throughout the rig, crucial for Mel's heat-induced migraines, making this feature an essential addition to their full-time living setup. The ease of installation and energy efficiency make it a perfect choice for this build. Final Touches: Gas Struts, Drawer Slides & Flooring As the cabinets come together, the attention to detail is evident. Kevin installs black ELOH SHANG 24-inch drawer slides for smooth operation and modern aesthetics, while Apex Stones gas struts are added to upper cabinets for easy access. For the flooring, they choose LifeProof Scratch Stone Flooring, known for its durability and ease of installation, ensuring that their floors can withstand life on the road. Next Time on Tiny Home Tours Truck Build: In the next episode, Abe and Mel will install their Signature Solar system, plumbing, and complete their gorgeous bathroom. Don’t miss the final stages of this incredible transformation as their custom expedition truck becomes a full-fledged tiny home on wheels!
