The cartoon is about a wise and brave Russian girl Vasilisa, who fooled the tsar to rescue her husband. Her husband Stavr was a rich merchant, and the tsar kept borrow his money but never paid the debt, so Stavr came to the tsar and demanded his money back. Stavr was foolishly rude, the tsar got angry and used the opportunity not to pay the debt by sending Stavr in prison and expropriating all his property.
