Баядерка Никия должна развлекать гостей танцами. Она не может скрыть своей скорби. Взор ее устремлен к любимому Солору. Никии вручают от имени Солора корзину цветов. Бурной радости и отчаянием исполнен танец баядерки. Но неожиданно из цветов выползает змея и кусает ее. Никия понимает, что виновница происшедшего — мстительная дочь раджи. Великий брамин обещает спасти Никию, если она полюбит его. Но баядерка всё равно верна своей любви к воину, хотя зачем жить, если любимый предал ее? Никия умирает. Солор в отчаянии убегает со свадебного торжества. Танец со змеёй — ритуальный танец и одновременно монолог раненой души, он строится на крайностях и контрастах, на резком переходе из одной экспрессивной позы к другой, из одного крайнего состояния в другое. Плавных переходов намеренно нет: мгновенная вспышка энергии гасится полным упадком душевных сил; тело танцовщицы, вытянувшись в струну, взмывает ввысь, а затем чуть ли не распластывается по сцене. Chabukiani, R. Nureyev. The garden in front of the Rajah’s palace. A magnificent celebration on the occasion of the engagement of the noble warrior Solor and the daughter of Raja Gamzatti. The bayadere Nikiya should entertain the guests with dances. She can’t hide her grief. Her gaze is directed to her beloved Solor. Nikiya is presented with a basket of flowers on behalf of Solor. The dance of the bayadere is performed with stormy joy and despair. But suddenly a snake crawls out of the flowers and bites her. Nikiya realizes that the culprit of what happened is the vengeful daughter of the rajah. The great brahmin promises to save Nikiya if she loves him. But the bayadere is still faithful to her love for the warrior, although why live if her beloved betrayed her? Nikiya is dying. Solor runs away from the wedding celebration in despair. Dancing with a snake is a ritual dance and at the same time a monologue of a wounded soul, it is based on extremes and contrasts, on a sharp transition from one expressive pose to another, from one extreme state to another. There are no smooth transitions intentionally: an instantaneous flash of energy is extinguished by a complete collapse of mental strength; the dancer’s body, stretched out in a string, soars skyward, and then almost flattens out on the stage.
