In the middle of the 19th century, the Malagasy monarchs actively resisted the invasion of the French colonialists. Queen Ranavaluna II established Christianity as the state religion of Madagascar. In 1895, as a result of another conflict with the French colonists, the kingdom of Merina fell. Merina’s anthem was the song “Andriamanitra ô! Tahionao ny Mpanjakanay!“ (“God! Bless our king!“).
