Thick rain clouds swiftly covered the mountains in the western Kanto region this afternoon. Reports of unusually large hail began coming in from Hachioji, a city in western Tokyo. Eyewitnesses captured images of hailstones as big as oranges, causing widespread alarm. The intense hailstorm severely damaged thousands of vehicles across the city. Hundreds of homes suffered significant roof damage, with tiles ripped apart by the force of the hail. People were forced to seek shelter wherever they could, hiding under tables, cars, and in nearby buildings. Streets quickly became flooded as torrential rain combined with the hail, overwhelming drainage systems. Dangerous lightning strikes added to the chaos, with several reported hits to local infrastructure. Powerful gusts of wind made the situation worse, spreading the destruction further. Signs were torn from storefronts, and pieces of debris littered the roads. Damaged power lines led to widespread blackouts across several parts of Hachioji. Local authorities urged residents to remain indoors and avoid any unnecessary travel. Emergency teams are working tirelessly to clear blocked roads and restore power in affected neighborhoods. Although no injuries have been confirmed, the material damage is reported to be extensive. Some neighborhoods are still without power, with temporary blackouts affecting daily life. Clean-up efforts are already underway, with the worst-hit areas receiving immediate attention. Weather forecasters have issued warnings of additional thunderstorms approaching the region.
