Get the Heidegger book Pathmarks - Support my work here - Philosophy tutorials - Take classes with me - This Core Concept video focuses on Martin Heidegger's essay “Plato's Doctrine of Truth“ (found in the book, Pathmarks), which discusses the Allegory of the Cave in Republic book 7. Here, Heidegger distinguishes between two basic conceptions of truth. The more primary - and older - conception of truth is of aletheia or unhiddenness. The newer conception of truth - associated with Plato - makes truth a matter of orthotes, or correctness. This correctness has to do with correspondence between the ideas or forms - which allow individual things to be what they are - and human perception, cognition, or language.
