Haruko Ichikawa's Land of the Lustrous, or Houseki no Kuni (宝石の国), makes brilliant use of the medium of manga to drive its aesthetic and narrative--from the monochrome pallet to her minimalist style and symmetry. How could that possibly carry over to anime? Rather than try to emulate Ichikawa's look, the team at Studio Orange instead took a route unique to the medium of anime to craft a new aesthetic--but one that still captures the spirit of the source. Let's dive in to how both Houseki no Kuni's manga and anime use their respective mediums to the fullest extent to shed light on what makes a perfect adaptation. Enjoy!
