It is EUROVISION time this week! The Final of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest is taking place this weekend, Saturday, May 14, 2022 in Turin, Italy. This is the TopPop video of ’Waterloo’, the first no. 1 hit of ABBA, the song that made them winners of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. The song that started it all. This video was recorded in the Toppop Studios and first broadcast on 29 April 1974. ’Waterloo’ was two weeks at no. 1 in the Dutch ’Daverende Dertig ’ hitparade that was used in the Toppop broadcast. In the Dutch Top 40 is was no. 2 for four weeks. The song is written by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson. It also reached the Top 2000 in 1999 and stayed in the Top2000 for all consecutive years. ABBA are a Swedish pop supergroup formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The group’s name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1982. ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 with ’Waterloo’, giving Sweden its first triumph in the contest. They are the most successful group to have taken part in the competition. ’Waterloo’ reached the no. 1 position in the following countries: The Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, South Africa, Switzerland. In many other countries it reached the Top 10 such as Spain, France, Canada, USA, Australia, Austria and New Zealand. The single sold a reportedly 8 million copies. ’Waterloo’ was chosen at the latest edition of the Eurovision as the best of all winners of the 65 years of the Eurovision Song Contest. The sound and picture quality are not what you might expect from us, but we still have not traced the original recording, so for the time being we have to live with this copy of a copy.
