Depressed Europe: Antidepressant Use Soars Europeans are the largest consumers of antidepressant drugs in the world, and use has more than doubled between 2000 and 20w0 in 18 European countries, OECD data shows. Consumption of the drugs remained highest in Iceland, but is now closely followed by Portugal, where use rose 304%. The Czech Republic saw the highest increase - 577%. Despite recording below average use and being one of the largest three countries by population, spending on the pills is highest in Germany, beating out Spain and Italy.
