In this video Emilliano Carrillo of Sun and Stars forge teaches a class on how to assemble a Viking era spear using pattern welded steel. Students start by assembling billets of damascus steel, that is later cut up into pieces and welded back together and forged into the preform of a spear head. The forms are then forged to shape, then a socket is welded on. Spears are ground, heat treated, and attached to spear shafts. Emiliano Carrillo is a bladesmith out of New Hampshire, and he specializes in recreating viking era, and Japanese blades.
