Yong Yang’s parents called the authorities for help. The police shot and killed their son instead. Yong Yang, a 40-year-old man living in the Los Angeles community of Koreatown with bipolar disorder, was fatally shot by police after experiencing a bipolar episode, and locking himself in his parents’ apartment with a knife. Although mental health personnel initially responded, and within just two minutes decided to involve the police. Bodycam footage shows that police opened the apartment door after a long period trying to reason with Yang, to no avail. Seconds later, they found Yang with his knife, and shot him. Officers then proceeded to arrest the corpse and, somehow, avoid telling the family what had truly happened. The police and a clinician claimed Yang had been violent, but Yang’s parents dispute this, insisting he was not physically aggressive and was simply trying to protect himself. The bodycam footage appears to corroborate their version of events, with Yang keeping his distance from the officers during the extremely brief confrontation. The Yang family is now demanding an independent investigation and the release of all related evidence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freedom over censorship, truth over narrative.
