Among the Russian camps for Ukrainian prisoners of war, the most notorious one is Olenivka, in Russian-occupied Donetsk Oblast. This prison-turned-camp became infamous due to reports of abuse and torture inflicted upon its prisoners. On the night of July 28, 2022, an explosion in the camp killed 57 Ukrainian prisoners, and Olenivka became known globally. Who runs this prison? Step by step, the Kyiv Independent's War Crimes Investigations Unit collected information about the functioning of the prison, as well as its guards, managers, and supervisors from Russia. They were able to identify the people who were involved in the systematic abuse of Ukrainian POWs, including Mariupol defenders, who were also sent to Olenivka after the siege of the city. The Kyiv Independent is almost entirely funded by our readers. Both investigations and high-quality video production demand substantial resources. The best way to support our new unit is by either becoming a monthly or annual member or making a one-time contribution. You can support us for as little as $1, and it only takes a minute.
