The young pianist regales us, as ever, with a daring program made up of repertoire favorites as well as some of his own pieces. The prolific Tsotne opens the program by sharing his own new Fantaisie-Impromptu with the Verbier audience, before taking on the four beloved Impromptus of Schubert’s Op. 90, featuring some of the composer’s stormiest and most heart-rending passages. After the pause, he performs another new work—a tribute to Debussy and Ravel—and then moves on to the monumental challenge of Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, one of the most notoriously demanding works ever written for the piano (by design—Ravel set out to surpass the difficulty of Balakirev’s Islamey).
