This is a YouTube premiere! This Blondie performance on the TROS Top50 show was first broadcast on the episode 47 of May 19, 1979. “Hanging on the Telephone“ is a song written by Jack Lee. The song was first performed by his short-lived US West Coast power pop band The Nerves; later in 1978, it was recorded and released as a single by the American rock band Blondie. Blondie had discovered the song via a cassette tape compilation which Jeffrey Lee Pierce had given the band. Beginning with a phone sound-effect courtesy of producer Mike Chapman, Blondie’s version of the song was released on the band’s breakthrough third album, Parallel Lines. The single was a top five hit in the UK and has since seen critical acclaim as one of the band’s best songs. Blondie is an American rock band co-founded by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. The band was a pioneer in the American new wave scene of the mid-1970s in New York. Their first two albums contained strong elements of these genres, and although highly successful in the United Kingdom and Australia, Blondie was regarded as an underground band in the United States until the release of Parallel Lines in 1978. Over the next five years, the band achieved several hit singles including “Heart of Glass“, “Call Me“, “Atomic“, “The Tide Is High“, and “Rapture”. The band became noted for its eclectic mix of musical styles, incorporating elements of disco, pop, reggae, and early rap music. This is a YouTube premiere!
