In the second year of the First World War the British Army was faced with severe problems. Its core of full time professionals had been decimated in the desperate battles to halt the German onslaught in 1914. Time was desperately needed to recruit, train and organise a new army, but the urgent demands of allies including the French and Russians meant that action was needed now. In his latest film, Author, Dr Spencer Jones, Senior Lecturer in Armed Forces and War Studies at the University of Wolverhampton, shows how this poorly equipped army courageously coped with the alien world of trench warfare on the western front. He also reveals the role played by Canadian and Indian armies in this “forgotten” year of the Great War.
