The death toll continues to rise, with over 1,000 people still unaccounted for. The fires have been raging across Maui for almost a week, and remain out of control. The Hawaii governor said it was a ‘fire hurricane’ with gusting 80 mph winds and ‘1,000-degree heat’. However, the island’s 400 sirens failed to function during these catastrophic events, causing outrage and questions among residents. The governor claims the telecommunications were destroyed. At least 2,000 homes were destroyed, resulting in $6 billion in damages, according to Maui Police Chief John Pelletier.
