Claudia Sheinbaum was elected Mexico’s first woman president in a resounding victory for the left-wing candidate. The former mayor of Mexico City vowed on Monday that she would not let the country down after being elected with between 58 and 60 per cent of the votes. “I won’t fail you,” she said. “I will become the first woman president of Mexico.” Sheinbaum was speaking at a hotel in the city shortly after electoral authorities announced that a statistical sample had shown she held an irreversible lead. The historic vote, the largest in the country’s history, elects the president, as well as about 20,000 other positions, including all members of Mexico’s Congress, governors in eight states, the head of Mexico City’s government and thousands of mayors.
