According to the Pali Canon, immediately after achieving Enlightenment, the Buddha spent 7 weeks in various locations. He meditated under the Bodhi Tree, the Banyan tree, the Mucalinda Tree (the King of Cobras), and, finally, under the Rajayatana Tree, each for a week. While sitting under the Rajayatana Tree, two merchant brothers named Tapussa and Bhallika from Ukkala (Orissa, modern-day Myanmar) offered the Buddha a meal of sticky rice and honey. After the Buddha had partaken of the meal, the two men prostrated themselves at his feet and requested refuge in the Buddha and his teachings. They took the Buddha and his teachings as their refuge until their last breath.
