Sevastopol is the biggest city in Crimea and port on the Black Sea. Since the referendum in 2014, Sevastopol has been administered as a federal city of the Russian Federation as it was from 1993-1997(1997-2014 was leased from Ukraine). Ukraine and most other countries do not recognize Crimea as part of Russia The city has mostly a Russian population, with a minority of Ukrainians. It has been 7 years since there was a controversial referendum in the peninsula of Crimea where the local population voted to break away from Ukraine and join Russia. The west has called the Referendum a shame and not recognized that Crimea is part of Russia by claiming it was an annexation. The referendum was held on the 16th of March 2014 following the unrest in Kyiv and the removal of the Ukrainian president Viktor the 17th after the results were counted the Supreme Council of Crimea declared the formal independence of the Republic of Crimea.
