Finale: Andante maestoso; Allegro vivace (34:08) Willem Mengelberg, conductor The Concertgebouw Orchestra Recorded on May 10, 1928 at the Grand Hall of the Concertgebouw The present recording is the earliest important recording of this symphony. Willem Mengelberg is really in his element here, and the Concertgebouw sounds wonderful. Although made with early carbon microphones the sonic quality is very good. Mengelberg, like Weingartner, Cortot, and Stokowski, played a major role in developing the art of early electrical recording. Working closely with the technicians and producers to produce recordings that sounded good even in the 1920s. In the present version with restored acoustics we can hear how Mengelberg and the engineers arranged the orchestra from its normal set
