This is a team that has only been training together since June of 2016. Of the 11-member squad (nine male, two female), only seven grew up sailing, and have a mixed racing background at that -- team racers, match racers, 420, and Laser sailors. But it’s the other four who make this team interesting. The remaining four sailors are essentially rookies -- a former rugby player, swimmer, boxer and a footballer -- only beginning their sailing careers in Easter of 2016. Compare that experience level to other teams that boast full rosters of elite, life-long sailors, and the potential for disadvantage is glaring – and that’s before the boats are even in the water. Think Cool Runnings but in a boat instead of a bobsled. Team Bermuda is the classic underdog story, but they are also the home team.
