In this cantata by Bach, the chorale “Herr Jesu Christ, ich schrei zu dir“ (Freiburg, 1620) plays a central role, described as a hymn 'of a troubled and sorrowful heart'. Bach has it sung once in this cantata, in the final chorale, but with another strophe. However, the chorale melody is already woven into the opening chorus, as a two-part canon between the slide trumpet and the oboes. It leads the listener from plaintive despair at the beginning to the reassuring finale: Jesus the Saviour gives strength and makes healthy.
