For much of the 19th century, Britain and Russia were embroiled in a covert war, which played out on the vast steppes, deserts and mountains of Central Asia, between the Caucasus in the west and Chinese Turkistan and Tibet in the east. Britain was convinced that the Russian Empire, which was expanding eastwards at a rate of 20,000 square miles each year, had ambitions to seize British India and Russia was equally threatened by Britain’s desire to control much of Central Asia in order to protect its ‘jewel in the crown’; thus the ‘Great Game’, the Bolshaya Igra, began. In this fascinating talk, our regular guest speaker Major JGH Corrigan MBE, retells the fascinating and dangerous story of the players in this secret battle, laden with espionage, torture and execution.
