Algeria Joins Hands with Palestine #israelpalestineconflict #palestine #algeria_news Following appeals from numerous political parties, organisations, and online campaigns, Algerian authorities eventually gave authorization for sympathy marches with Gaza. Algerians flocked to the streets, unified in their outrage and unshakable support for Palestine, regardless of their many political and ideological connections. “Please accept our apologies for the delay; we were waiting for the permit,“ read a banner hoisted high during Algerian rallies against Israeli atrocities in Gaza, more than 12 days into Israel's onslaught. “The Algerian position should be in accord with its official and popular components,“ argues Abderrazak Makri, former head of the Social Movement for Peace, who was detained after protesting Israel's shelling of Gaza's Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital. “When we took to the streets on the night of the hospital bombing, our purpose was to preserve our honour and that of all Algerians,“ he subsequently tweeted. Why is Algeria an exception in terms of permitting its population to protest? Claims of a difficult position and fears about exploiting the Palestinian cause are only false excuses.“ Algeria has traditionally backed the Palestinian cause, and it is clear that the Algerian people will support Gaza and Palestine. Algerians, who faced the cruel tyranny of French colonisation, have a historical connection to the Palestinian people's battles. This unity is not a new phenomenon; it dates back to the early days of the Israeli occupation. The late Algerian President Houari Boumediene is credited with the phrase “With Palestine, oppressor or oppressed.“ Furthermore, the Palestinian state was declared on Algerian land in 1988. Furthermore, Palestine's admittance to UNESCO in 2012 followed an application submitted by Algeria in 2011. Let us not forget the peace reconciliation summit between Fatah and Hamas in Algeria in October 2022, as well as the ongoing financial support and various forms of help supplied to Palestine, including scholarships for Palestinian students. Algeria recently welcomed 635 Palestinian students. “When we took to the streets on the night of the hospital explosion, our goal was to defend Algerian pride in general.“ Why is Algerian citizens not allowed to protest? Claims and concerns about exploiting the Palestinian cause are only feeble excuses.“ Following the march, reactions varied, with activists in the media and human rights saying it fell short of expectations. In a media statement, lawyer Toufik Belali described it as missing substance and energy, saying, “The marches were hollow and empty, lacking spirit.“ The government determined the timing, route, and even the slogans.“ Protesters also expressed their displeasure. “Today's march and our involvement came far too late; ideally, we should have been among the first, right from the start of the bombardment of Gaza.“ Our participation in this march is the least we can do for our Palestinian brothers and sisters. It is critical that we are present today. “How can Morocco, which has normalised relations with Israel, allow its residents to protest on a regular basis while we wait for permission from the authorities?“ Maryam, an Algerian demonstrator, remarked. algeria joins hands with palestine israel gaza palestine latest news israel palestine conflict israel palestine al jazeera english gaza strip aljazeera live al jazeera aljazeera live news al jazeera video aljazeera english israel news news headlines aljazeera latest news benjamin netanyahu israel hamas war israel latest news english news palestine news world news latest news english gaza latest news
