In celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz docking and the ‘handshake in space’ which took place on July 17, 1975 between Soviet Cosmonaut Alexey Leonov and American astronaut Thomas Stafford the U.S. Embassy and American Center in Moscow invite you to virtual meetings with former NASA astronauts. Welcome to a virtual conversation with Daniel Tani, who will talk about his journey to becoming an astronaut. Daniel Tani is a retired astronaut and director of foundation grants at the United States-Japan Foundation. Previously, he was a faculty member at The American School in Japan, teaching high school and middle school science, technology and design. While at NASA, he flew on 2 space missions, for an accumulated 132 days in space, featuring 6 space walks. After retiring from NASA, Tani was the vice president of Mission and Cargo Operations at the Orbital Sciences Corporation, which specializes in the design, manufacture, and launch of space and rocket systems. Daniel spent a lot fo time at Star city in Russia (2002 -2007), and flew with Yuri Malenchenko on Expedition 16. He was on a backup crew with Mikhail Tyurin and is trained to fly on the Soyuz, but both of his flights were on the shuttle.
