On July 4th, 2021, a massive explosion occurred in the Caspian Sea. As this explosion rocked a section of Azerbaijan, a tall fireball could be seen reaching 1,640 feet or 500 meters into the sky. What had just occurred was not human caused, but rather a natural event caused by an explosive eruption of a mud volcano. This video will discuss this mud volcano, how it formed, and the many tall mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan. I want to note that only a small fraction of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan have produced explosive eruptions in historical time, as the vast majority have not done this.
