A small group of Hong Kongers now living in Australia are claiming that some billboards promoting Hong Kong are “blatant lies” and “very upsetting,” and they are demanding Australian authorities take them down. Of course, their authoritarian attempts to limit freedom of speech in Australia were rejected, but we’ll take a closer look at this story anyway. Let’s get reporting! Self-exiled Hong Kongers now living in Australia, following the introduction of the National Security Law that effectively ended that city’s two-year-long siege by often violent rioters, are now demanding Australian authorities remove advertising they don’t agree with, despite the fundamental belief in freedom of expression held by the Australian people. Recently a bunch of billboards were put up around Sydney and Melbourne to promote Hong Kong, but activists have labeled them “blatant lies” and “very upsetting.” So what is featured in the ads? Violence? Political threats? Dangerous propaganda? Well, let’s take a look.
