Twenty year old, hazel-eyed Lynsie Ekelund was a student at Fullerton College studying journalism. She lived at home with her mother, with whom she was very close. The tight bond Lynsie and her mother Nancy shared had been forged by a car accident in which 5 year old Lynsie had been thrown from the vehicle. Nancy spent more than a years by her daughter's side as she endured lengthy hospital stays and multiple surgeries. The car accident resulted in partial paralysis in one arm and she walked with a limp. Nonetheless, Lynsie was thriving and had an active social life. On Feburary 16, 2001, Lynsie canceled her traditional Friday night plans with her mom to spend the night at a girlfriend's house. A male friend picked up Lynsie in his white truck and the two left together. Nancy smiled and waved goodbye as they pulled out of the driveway.
