Protesters were seen hurling projectiles at police as security forces tried to disperse the crowds gathered in the streets of Bogota on Wednesday, demanding government action to tackle poverty, police violence, and inequalities in healthcare and education systems. Dozens of people were killed, and hundreds injured as a wave of protests swept across Colombia from April 28 in the wake of a proposed, but now-withdrawn, tax reform. Similar demonstrations against President Ivan Duque’s administration have been taking place since the end of 2019 over a variety of grievances, including corruption and unemployment, as well as indigenous rights and inequality.
