Step-by-step description of an integrated human-machine interface provided to a patient with above-elbow amputation for the control of a prosthetic hand. Severed nerves were transferred to native muscles and free muscles grafts to create additional myoelectric sources for prosthetic control. A permanent osseointegrated interface provides direct skeletal attachment and allows for bidirectional communication with the prosthesis. The newly created electro-neuromuscular constructs provide intuitive motor neural signals which can be decoded to control the prosthesis. This novel combination of surgical reconstruction procedures combined with a neuromusculoskeletal interface allows the patient to intuitively control all five fingers of a bionic hand.
