Around 400 firefighters and 18 water-dropping aircraft battled the blaze near Xylokastro in the Peloponnese region. While the initial large front was extinguished, isolated pockets continued to burn, prompting evacuation orders for three villages. A section of a major highway connecting Athens with the western port city of Patras was also closed. The flames were fanned by very strong winds blowing through the forests. Fires also broke out in other areas across the region, including Xirokambi, Andravida and others. More than a dozen homes were destroyed and many more were damaged. Greece suffers from devastating wildfires every summer, which are exacerbated by global warming.
