Icelandic Volcano Erupts Near Capital After Earthquakes The Iceland Meteorological Office insisted that a volcano that erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula on Monday doesn’t pose an immediate danger to people nearby, despite initial fears over smoke and lava spewing out. The eruption occurred near Keflavik Airport close to the capital Reykjavik after around 4,700 earthquakes were recorded in the seismic hotspot over the previous six days. The region’s Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted last August for three weeks, while the Fagradals Mountain volcano erupted in 2021 after laying dormant for around 6,000 years.
