The subject of the song Wir sind des Geyers schwarzer Haufen was The German Peasants' War from 1524 to 1525. This song in particluar sings of Black Company,their ranks where compsed of Franconian farmers and mercenaries totaling about 700 men. The leader of Black Company was Florian Geyer von Giebelstadt who was a Nobleman and knight but sympathetic to the peasants plight, Geyer used the symbol of a tied shoe or Bundschuh on they're flags the significance of this was to show the joint rising of the the peasants against their lords. The song itself was written in 1920 by the youth moment Bündnis Jugend, it was based off the poem The poor Kunrad created 1888.
