This ballet was purpose-written for Maya Plisetskaya by Rodion Schedrin and became her first venture into choreography. To reduce Tolstoy's 'Anna Karenina' to a two-act ballet is quite a feat, so many story lines were omitted focusing the ballet on the 'main triangle': Karenina, her husband, and count Vronsky. Those who have read 'Karenina' in full may find the plot oversimplified and disagree with Plisetskaya's interpretation of Anna. Yet unusual music and the way they dance it make this ballet an interesting experience.
