Just a quick video of my male carpintis Rio hondo. People often confuse my fish with texas cichlids but they are not texas cichlids they are Herichthys carpintis. texas cichlids are Herichthys Cyanoguttatus they are a different species. Although they’re very closely related both H. carpintis and H.  cyanoguttatus completely different species that naturally inhabit completely different parts of North America. Due to the fact that cyanoguttatus are native to areas in and around Texas, they were given the common name “Texas Cichlids“ in the early days of the hobby. Whereas, carpintis are mainly native to areas surrounding the North Eastern parts of Mexico. The common names for H. carpintis were originally just “Carpintis Cichlid“ and “Pearlskin Cichlid“ but these days many fis stores and websites incorrectly call them things like “Green Texas“ or blue texas and others which only created more confusion. (I believe this was just due to their striking resemblance as juveniles) H. cyanoguttatus will always have smaller more concentrated pearling (almost just specs) and will lack the lines/ maze patterns under the eye. They will also mostly remain grayish brown to lighter shades and sometimes almost white. They will also achieve a slightly larger size as adults.
