The Snow Maiden (1968) in monochrome Snegurochka (The Snow Maiden) is a soviet fairy tale art-house directed by Pavel Kadochnikov from Ostrovsky’s play of the same name (1873). The play tells the story of The Snow Maiden, a supernatural being, the daughter of Winter and Spring, descended to an idyllic utopian kingdom ruled by the Berendei. Unable to feel and love, beauteous, unattainable, cold, she’s living amongst human inflaming their hearts with lust and envy.
