Alonso spent his formative years at Real Sociedad where he made his first-team debut at the age of 18 and went on to make more than 100 appearances for the club. He later joined Liverpool in 2004 and was part of their historic Champions League-winning night in Istanbul in 2005. The Spaniard then moved to Real Madrid, playing under both Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti. In the latter stages of his career, the midfielder went to Germany and played under Pep Guardiola, and Ancelotti once more, at Bayern Munich. He won three successive Bundesliga titles before hanging up his boots in 2017.
