Elias Canetti was a German language novelist and poet, born in Bulgaria to an ethnic German family, who wrote works in many languages. Canetti's books include Auto-da-Fé, Crowds and Power, and The Torch in My Ear. Elias Canetti was born in 1905 to businessman Jacques Canetti and Mathilde née Arditti in Ruse, a city on the Danube in Bulgaria, Canetti was the eldest of three sons. His ancestors were Sephardi Jews. His paternal ancestors settled in Ruse from Ottoman Adrianople. The original family name was Cañete, named after Cañete, Cuenca, a village in Spain. His father was a wealthy timber merchant. He was educated at the Universities of Sofia, Munich, and Berlin. He later became a lecturer in the German language at the University of Vienna.
