A serious crude oil spill in central Peruvian coast, indirectly caused by the recent volcanic eruption in Tonga, has killed uncountable sea creatures and contaminated some 18,000 square meters of beaches. According to the Peruvian government, a tanker was unloading in a major refinery when it was hit by one of the giant waves from the tsunami triggered by the Tonga eruption, causing crude oil to spill out. The government also blamed Spanish company Repsol, which operates the refinery, for not taking adequate action to alleviate the negative effects of the spill on the local environment.
