I often receive requests for a very basic felting tutorial, so I thought it'd be perfect to do one based on the very first felt kit I tried myself. All the kits from the Hamanaka “Aclaine Felt Mascot“ series are great and I've linked them all below. Aclaine fiber is made out of synthetic polyester so it's easier to felt and than natural wool fiber. My best advice for beginners is to work slowly which reduces the risk of poking yourself. Don't use too much wool at once. It's much better to start with a small shape, the wrap it in more layers of wool to build up size. This gives you more control over the shape. Needle-felting takes longer than many people expect, each piece here (wing, body, ear etc) took at least 15-30 minutes to complete. The entire kit will take around 3-4 hours, so you can spread the work out over several days if you like. A very common beginner mistake is not felting long enough so your pieces feel loose and wispy. This can be easily fixed by spending some more time poking your piece until the wool is nice and firm. Difficulty: VERY EASY Chick, Bunny & Elephant: Bear Trio (this was my first kit): Puppy, Cat and Panda: NB: If you'd never felted before, don't forget to buy the needle & mat!!
